The No.1 way to spot a liar

Do you ever wonder if the words coming out of your spouse's or co-worker's mouth are really true?

According to Forbes, humans are hardwired to trust the people around us -- it makes life easier and a lot more pleasant. But there are times, say, when dealing with a cheating spouse or picking a political candidate, when knowing the harsh truth is in our best interest.

The mystery stops now. In a video released last week, Minds.com reveals the top 10 ways to spot a liar. From variances in voice tones to a simple sweeping of hair, they've accumulated the top research in the field to help you decode the physical symptoms of deceit.

Here is their full list, which they pulled from sources such as TED, Forbes, the Huffington Post and the FBI:

1. Honesty -- A liar will not show as much anger as an honest person when accused;

2. Story -- A liar will often give too much information and struggle to repeat events in the opposite order;

3. Escape -- A liar will subconsciously point their feet toward the exit or place a physical barrier between them and the interviewer, such as a water bottle;

4. Voice pitch -- A liar will often lower or raise their tone of voice and have more hesitation in their speech;

5. Leaked expressions -- Leaked expressions occur when true emotions "leak" through. For example, a lying person might nod their head when denying a statement or shake their head while agreeing;

6. Eye contact -- A liar will often keep eye contact for longer periods than a dishonest person. An honest person retains eye contact for about 60 per cent of the conversation.

8. Repetition -- Liars will often repeat the whole question back at the start of their answer in order to buy time to think of a response.

9. Grooming gestures -- Signs of anxiety such as brushing their hair or adjusting their tie.

1o. Non-contracted denial -- "I was not there!" is a non-contracted denial. "I wasn't there" is a contracted denial. A person trying to hide something will often use formal language.
